Phoenix /fēniks/: (in classical mythology) a unique bird inhabiting the Arabian Desert that burned itself on a funeral pyre before rising from the ashes with renewed youth to live through another cycle.

This isn’t mythology, it’s war, and Hendy is left in the hands of Hell’s cruelest gatekeepers.
His team is killed before his very eyes, and despite his efforts to save them, he’s captured and subjected to merciless torture—losing virtually every piece of his identity but his pulse.
After his rescue, he returns home from Afghanistan, saddled with facing the daunting task of healing his physical scars as well as the invisible ones—his emotional demons.
Dr. Presley Cole isn’t one to shy away from a challenge. Embarking on a new journey, she makes it her mission to prove to Hendy that his life isn’t over; that he’s worthy of love.
Because sometimes even a phoenix needs help to rise…
Out of the Ashes.

RC Boldt is the wife of Mr. Boldt, a retired Navy Chief, mother of Little Miss Boldt, and former teacher of many students. She currently lives on the southeastern coast of North Carolina, enjoys long walks on the beach, running, reading, people watching, and singing karaoke. If you're in the mood for some killer homemade mojitos, can't recall the lyrics to a particular 80's song, or just need to hang around a nonconformist who will do almost anything for a laugh, she's your girl.

My Review

*****Five Stars*****

Wow. I need a minute to think about what to say about this book. Out of the Ashes deals with some pretty heavy subjects, and I found it to be quite emotional.

Hendy, former Navy SEAL, had been captured and tortured for a year. Now that he's back in civilisation again, he struggles with his self-worth. All he sees when he looks in the mirror, are his scars. Once a ladies man who took pride in his appearance, Hendy now hides behind his cap, tilting his head to show his least "flawed" side, believing that he is no longer good enough to love.

Presley has only been with one man. A man who hasn't shown any real interest in her for quite some time, constantly standing her up so he can work, and trying to stifle her true self. She has been led to believe that this is how things are, that this is what is to be expected from men.

This story is both heart-breaking and heart-warming. One particular part in the story absolutely broke my heart and had me crying so much I had to put my kindle down until I had composed myself. There are some fantastically funny moments, especially when Presley begins to come out of her shell and be herself, and of course, there are some seriously sexy scenes.
What I love about this book, is that it deals with something that I think everyone deals with at some point in their lives - acceptance. Finding that love of yourself so that you can truly love another. Feeling comfortable in your own skin. Both Hendy and Presley have their battle scars to deal with, and we get to see a glimpse into their thoughts so we can fully understand their minds at the time.

I absolutely adore this book. Highly recommended!
